Abstract

Qashgar Night was written by Abdur茅him Otkur between the years of 1948-1949 and published in 1979. Qashgar Night is a legend about the love of Leyla and Kerim. Otkur has added a social dimension to the legend through a tragic narration of the tyranny to which Kerim and Leyla (Leylig眉l) are exposed and the injustice and oppressions of feudal powers and cruel governors on public. While the cruel people are satirized, the people who do not give in to the tyranny are applauded as hero. In the legend, lyric and epic features are blended efficiently. It reflects the social life of the period Uighur people's manners and customs. One of the heroes of the legend, Kerim catches attention by means of his heroism as well as wise and smart behaviours. Kerim is a symbol of hope and steadiness in the legend. Leyla is a faithful, conscientious, and intelligent girl. Otkur often emphasizes Leyla's modesty, virtue, and bravery.
